Composite tapes utilizing aero gel insulation layers

Aero gel is the lowest density and most efficient insulation barrier currently known.  Great Lakes Composites (GLC) thermoplastic tape manufacturing process is uniquely suited for combining aero gel into sheets that can be efficiently fabricated into structures. Many applications including building structures, transportation equipment (e.g. refrigeration trucking), missile body construction, etc., all with multi-million dollar market size.

Basalt Geomesh for construction, concrete reinforcement and infrastructure reinforcement programs

The market for basalt geomesh is growing rapidly as a reinforcement fabric for concrete reinforcement replacing steel mesh.  It can reduce the amount of concrete required in many applications by 10 to 30% because it doesn’t rust and can be placed close to the surface.  The GLC thermoplastic tape process may provide a rapid cost-effective process for manufacturing the mesh.

Basalt fiber thermoplastic composite rebar

The GLC thermoplastic tape process may provide a low cost and efficient process for manufacturing highly reinforced basalt rebar.  This rear would have highly desirable marketing characteristics including high strength, corrosion resistance, formability in the field, coiling in long sections to eliminate splicing, and thermoplastic joining.

Ballistic composites using Aramids and other fibers in thermoplastic matrixes

The GLC tape process allows embedding ballistic fibers including aramids and Spectra into high toughness thermoplastic matrixes for light-weight and highly formable vehicle, building and body armor applications.

Low temperature formable composites based on poly caprolactone resins targeted for medical, ballistic, and commercial markets

GLC has proprietary technology for using thermoplastic resins based on PCL as the matrix resin for thermoplastic composites which can be readily formed at low temperature for orthopedic casts, body armor, prosthetics, and orthotics.

Natural fibers composites

The GLC process allows use of natural fibers as reinforcements replacing glass and other reinforcements with higher CO2 footprint in composites.  This is of increasing interest to automotive and transportation companies.

Bioplastic and sustainable composite tapes replacing petro-based plastics

The GLC process permits manufacturing proprietary high-performance thermoplastic composites based on biopolymers such as PLA, reducing petrochemical usage and reducing the CO2 footprint.  This is of increasing interest to automotive and transportation industries.

Recycled thermoplastic matrix composites, e.g. PET bottle scrap resins

The GLC process is amenable to the use of recycled PET bottle scrap and other recycled thermoplastics as the matrix resin in thermoplastic composites, turning low cost waste stream into high value-added structural materials.
